Dance Classes When You're an Adult
There is no shortage of dance classes in London. A fair
number of these are for kids so what should you do if you're a bit older?
What should you do if you're an adult that's never taken a
dance class in your life? The good news is that you are not alone and that
there are many people that find themselves in your shoes as well. In fact there
is a good chance that when you go to a dance class, there will be others that
are there for the first time as well.
One thing that is useful for a beginner to know as obvious
it may seem is to look for beginners classes for adults. You'd be surprised at
how many people don't.
Some classes might be 'open level' but actually are better
suited to those with some experience. You want to go to classes where you don't
need previous experience and the teacher explains the moves. This will make
your life a lot easier.
Classes are found in many styles, find one that resonates
with you and that will keep you motivated. If you can't be motivated by what
you're learning, you won't practice what you do. It goes without saying that
you'll need to do a fair bit of practice along the way.
Something worth noting is that in your first class things
may not go great. You may be ok but if you've not danced in a class before you
will find many things difficult to begin with.
This is totally natural so don't think you're awful just
because the moves are not coming naturally to you. If others are finding the
moves ok, chances are that they have done them before and it is not their first
time.
Once you find a good class, stay focused. Practice the
things that you learn and you will push on. While quite a lot of people go to adult beginners dance classes not that
many of them spend much time practicing what they learn.
This may be because they are adults that are busy and with
lots of obligations compared to kids. But it has to be mentioned because this
is what happens to many people.
Practice will of course make you improve faster. And you
will learn quicker too because when you do a new class, it won't all be new to
you. You will know some of the things already, and so can focus on what's new
to learn. You will feel more confident when you're in the class.
Don't think just because you're an adult that you can't become
a good dancer. You can, it's about how much you apply yourself. If you take
classes and work on what you learn at home, there's no reason why you can't
become a good dancer.
Don't worry so much about comparing yourself to others -
focus on your own dancing and improving that. Once you get going you will see
many ways you can improve, so you should get better and better with time.
It might take a while before you can follow everything in a
class really well, but it'll also feel so good when it happens. You will see
how far you've come and how much you have had to work to make that happen.
There are dance classes all over London. Do your research, find one or two that you like and get learning!
